How to win at blackjack
How to win
Blackjack is an explicit game. All the table rules are clearly on view for all to see and all the cards are played face up. The casino must declare how many packs of cards have been loaded into the shoe. This allows all the players to count the cards as they come out of the shoe and so calculate the odds on different cards appearing. When it comes to your decision whether to draw or stand, your chances of predicting a high or low card improve as more cards are drawn from the shoe. The quality of your decision is also improved because you know how the dealer must act if the first two cards total 17.
If you are playing for fun, you can just play by instinct. Some of the time, you will be lucky and win. But, most of the time, the House will win. The game is built on statistical rules and they favor the House in the longer run. Almost all the online casinos have “free” games where you can enjoy the game without risking any of your own money. But if you are more serious, count the cards and use simple math to calculate the probabilities. This gives you a very good chance of winning more of the time.
What is doubling?
To play, you first have to make a bet by clicking on one of the chips. The dealer then draws down two cards for you. You are allowed to double the bet and receive one more card. Suppose you have 11 made up of a 5 and 6. If the odds favor you drawing a card counting 7 to 10, it is worth doubling.
What is splitting?
If you draw two cards of the same value, you can treat them as separate hands. For example, if you draw two 8s, it is difficult to decide whether to stand or draw on a total of sixteen. But if you have two hands starting with 8, drawing any card valued 10 or 11 gives you a stronger position.
What is insurance?
In some versions of the game, this allows you to change the odds if the dealer’s first card is an Ace and there may be a blackjack. If you insure against a dealer’s blackjack by betting half your original bet, you will be paid at 2 to 1 if you also draw a blackjack. If the dealer does not have a blackjack, the hand proceeds as usual.
The optimal strategy
If you are playing poker, there is a lot of strategy based on your ability to blend probability with psychology. Players bluff, i.e. lie about what cards they hold. You have to work out when you really do have a winning hand and bet accordingly. In blackjack, you only play against the dealer who has no discretion on strategy. More importantly, you can see all the cards. In mathematical terms, this creates an optimal strategy for how to play every hand. Professionals learn this strategy and earn a good living out of blackjack.
